I was surprised to see that no one has written one of these.

A simple add-on that sends out a coupon in a preselected amount x days before a customer's birthday.

Sounded great to me, please feel free to flog freely.

Search birthday in the plugin section, I have not used any of these and do not know if they work with current version but will give you direction.

Unless required, some people may not want to give any birth information.

Also, if allowed can the customer change the date (in advance) of an order. I don't use birthdate so can't test.

Birthday campaign is one of the most inspired project I implemented on my online store. Remember I took the decision to implement it after I saw something similiar at Sephora store. In few words , a happy birthday email containing a coupon gift will never finish on trash folder before being read . No better reason to contact a customer :-) .
I have implemented this whithout install any module , only cron , php on a remote system . fraud checks included to see if customer already received a birthday mail on the same year maintaining a log table.
Do it , because is worth ! I recomend also using pickup date calendar on registration user account .
