    Default Alternative upgrade step

Have followed the directions but when i restore the original db into the new directory which says is successful I do not see any new data. Just a blank store - home page but no products.

Could one just copy the configure files from the original installation into the new directory and then change the directories according to the new directories in the configure files and would it work?

Maybe otherwise answer why I get the first problem? Thx.

Can't answer the first question since if you've followed all the FAQ instructions correctly it would have worked and there's nothing in what you've posted to indicate what you haven't understood correctly.

But the second is easier. Yes. You can simply copy the database contents to a new database and the files to a new location, then edit the two configure.php files to point to the new file locations and database (that's usually 8 lines edited in the admin/includes/configure and 5 in the includes/configure).

The "DB_PREFIX" setting from your old site configure.php needs to be used in your new site if you're going to have it work correctly after importing a database ... otherwise you're looking at different sets of data.

Worked fine when I reinstalled using the route in the instruction manual eg set up a new trial version and imported my changed files into it. Restored the old DB into the new one etc.

Have an idea for when one changes a file. Write in a unique code eg CF98777HY (say) into the top of the file which is quoted out along with maybe a brief description. Then when you do an upgrade use the facility under developer tools to look for this code which shoud bring up all the files and the details. Easier than checking each file and provides a system for going back and checking things if for some reason changes also bring out problems on the site. What do you think?

Or better yet, just get well-versed in using a comparison tool such as Winmerge
