Credit card payments showing as Gift Certificate/Coupon

I am working on a fresh install of zen cart (version 1.5.3), to date no plugins. I am using the westminster new theme but this problem exists with the default theme so I am fairly certain it's not a theme related issue.

Upon using a credit card to check out (I have a merchant account), zen cart logs these payments as a gift certificate/coupon. The payment is not processed. I have turned off all coupons and gift certificates, they are not even an option and the only other payment method I use is paypal. I have an SSL certificate installed as well.

I originally installed the payment module from the merchant company and when it did not charge the card but instead showed it as being paid by gift certificate, I used authorize.net. My merchant account allows use of this module without signing up for an account with them. Same result.

I'm not sure how to resolve this. I am not an expert in code by any means but I'm hoping someone may have run across this same issue and knows what to do to fix this.

Did your merchant account provider give you specific instructions for the auth.net setup?
Without an account with them???? who is them???

Wasn't TransFirst, was it?

No it is not transfirst and they use authorize.net as an emulator (sp?). I was on the phone with them and the error occurred even before I tried their authorizenet option.

I've seen instances where marketing dept promise the moon with implementations & haven't clue how to fix their implementation errors.

I've been with this particular merchant account for years and she basically told me today that I should search the zen cart forum. lol

In your TABLE_ORDERS_TOTAL (usually named orders_total) what are the entries for that Order Number?

Did they offer auth.net instructions & credentials after you proved their app didn't work? And/or the required auth.net account?

If you've been w/ them for years, what changed now? Many retail processors only know the ecommerce buzzwords but haven't a clue. Many retail CPS merchant accounts prohibit ecommerce processing undef the same account d u e to perceived exposure.
