hosting

okay, i am curious here... I have seen several people bashing GoDaddy.com for hosting and I am wondering why? I have used their hosting for various things for about 2-5 years now, as well as the E-Commerce company I worked for utilized them with no issues. What is the big problem with GD? I am only now launching my OWN e-commerce site www.nerdhavencomics.com and while i am not ready to switch yet, i would just like some reasons why i should eventually.

Please explain intelligently why they are bad with your posts and not just "Cause GoDaddy sucks!" replies.

Re: hosting

There is no need to go over the problems again, but I will summarize with the a couple of major problems. 1 they oversell their servers, Zen Cart is a big powerful program that needs some resources and the servers with 10000 accounts on them CAN NOT handle it. 2 Their will not open certain ports that are required by some shipping and payment modules. 3 Their configrations are non-standard and you have to jump through hoops to make things work - e.g. cURL.

So ... if you want to use them go ahead, but don't come crying when you get poor performance or you got hacked because of poor security.

okay the most of the rest of your post was informative, until your cocky attitude came into play here. I was asking a simple question. I never said i was gonna "come crying" with a problem. I was stating i never had an issue yet, and was curious what the problems were. Sorry you apparantly had a bad issue with them.

Re: hosting

Its not so much a BAD experience,
its Lots of bad experiences

Here is part of a ticket we just got the other day

Message: Ok... godaddy screwed me... convinced me zen cart with linkpoint API would work... then after it didn't, they sold me 6 months of hosting... and now I'm told I have to setup cURL or some crap... I'm tired of their crap

in short if you have to have a non standard port open
Linkpoint and Canada Post are 2 that I am aware of.
GD will NOT open them on shared hosting.

cURL is setup by proxy

and as Kim said servers are overloaded etc etc etc

Re: hosting

It's quite simple really. No one can provide quality web hosting when they offer 10,000 Mbs of web space, with 300,000 Mbs of bandwidth each month and all for around four and a half dollars per month.

I know that our American cousins who live "across the pond" like to get "more bangs for my buck" but that's plainly ridiculous. It can only be done with a business model which packs servers to the gills with sites, oversell web space and bandwidth like crazy, and use PC grade components in servers, which are much cheaoer than server grade components but not meant to run 24/7/365.

For plain HTML websites you'd probably be okay, but for dynamic PHP/MySQL based sites you need robust servers which aren't oversold and packed to the gills.

I have no interest in this because although Zen Cart Certified Hosts we concentrate on the UK and Europe. We don't get involved in USA Hosting simply because of what USA based bucket hosts offer for silly prices.

As for Kim's comments - they're based on the Zen Cart Team Members very often having to deal with support threads brought about with problems people experience with Go Daddy hosting. She's just trying to give you a "heads-up", that's all.

Re: hosting

Kim is referring to (over the years) the many hundreds of forum members who HAVE come crying to the forum with their GoDaddy issues - many of whom have then gone on to abuse the ZC developers for not building ZC in a manner which suits GoDaddy.

A LOT of people fail to appreciate that ecommerce today is a serious business, where you are accountable and responsible for the safety, security, privacy and functional reliability of your site. In many countries, there are LAWS that govern many aspects of online trading.

The chosen host is a key partner (and an absolutely critical link) in this chain of responsibility, and there is tangible evidence that GoDaddy is amongst that group of webshosts who do not care a hoot about these obligations.

You are free to host with whomever you like... but I echo Kim's statement... Don't come crying to the forum for help when things go pear-shaped with GD.

Caveat Emptor...

I would not call Kim's comment 'cocky' at all - quite the contrary. Kim's comment refers to the facts, facts which can be read in this forum in numerous places. Fellow zenners chose the cheap and nasty way and came complaining about Zen Cart not working the way it was designed to work - in other words they are blaming the software when in fact their host does not want come to the party due to inferior service.

If was in your position I would take Kim's comment as a very good piece of advice and steer clear of GD.

Re: hosting

It is with some mystery why developers and Zencart site owners do not take the issue of Hosting seriously.
Zencart is a good robust program and requires good quality hosting. Using a shared platform is going to catch you out especially if your site has hundreds of images and as many visitors and hopefully lots of sales.
Too many developers build good quality dynamic sites and then use cheap nasty budget hosting.

When ever I watch Nascar on the TV over here, I see the Go Daddy car going around and think there is that company that has all the bad comments in Zencart.

That's only the case if the host you use supplies cheap quality servers and pack them full of sites.

Absolutely correct.
