Gift Certificate Total Not Right

I had a customer purchase gift certificates - 7x8.00 = 56.00

Order confirmation and PayPal payment confirmation say 56.00 paid

Also received copy of email sent to customer that says "you have received a gift certificate worth 40.00". When I went to release the gift certificate, the amount is 40.00, now the gift certificate on the Gift Certificates List shows 40.00.

What happened to the other 16.00 in gift certificates?

What version of Zen Cart? What addons are installed?

Version 1.3.7, no add-ons installed. This has never happened before.

You are using a very outdated version and need to upgrade.

Well I don't want to upgrade because I don't want to have to redo all the customization I've done.

But that doesn't answer my original question as to why the gift certificate amount is wrong.
