Ghosts in the machine...hidden images

either easy to fix or complete mystery...

using the firefox 'view speed report' utility I'm finding images on my site that...well...aren't there (or at least can't be seen)

as you know, the web page speed report provides size and url for images etc. I'm getting various sized images (one image at a time but a different image after closing browser and restarting page) without a URL - just blank.

I originally attributed this to random selection of 'new' products in the sidebox... but I have turned off all sideboxes with images and set all the admin/config/index listings to 0 - so there shouldn't be any image on the page (I still show categories w/images).

I've even tried to hunt down the images based on their size but they seem to be off just a little, but I still think they are from new products

some are fairly big (22k) so it is a bit of an issue

Without the URL it is difficult to see what is happening.

could this be a database issue...?

some sort of residual calls showing up...? (that is an example of the extent of my technical wherewithall...:lookaroun )

I'm having issues with the DB server on my host... the site is down right now, and waiting for reply from the host tech support..

site is back up

tech support said "The database timed out and stalled for an unexplained reason." - this has happened a couple of times.

phantom images still haunting the site....:shocking:

I have started looking at other ZenCart sites and running the speed report -- I have found several sites with the same blank space for the exact same size invisible image, 11,632 which is pretty big. I've got four of them - one over 22KB...

two of the sites looked like they were still under construction...

what is it all about??

...banner ads...

even though I didn't have any banners turned on in layout box controller the system was apparently pulling sample images from zencart/images/banners...

I deleted all those images and my problem has gone away.

I know this is happening on many sites because I have 'seen' them

... just another reason to hate banner ads....:schmoll:
