MultiSite Module Support Thread

Hi everyone,

I recently had some work done on my site and my installation of MultiSite got overwritten. I managed to re-install it but now I see that the box for "Customers who bought this product also purchased..." shows products from both sites. I never noticed this before - does anyone else have this problem?

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

I have some serious problem. The template switch want work on the second www. (lets say https://www.mysite2.com) I have chosen to forward the second site to the first is that a problem? If yes witch method shod I use?

But if I use the direct link to my site (lets say http://mysite2.com.scorpionshops.com/ ) it works. But hers just some symbolic links pointing to the right files. But in this mode it works.

Can some one help me?

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Can this module be used for two shops on the same domain?

I have https://www.mydomain.com/shop1 and https://www.mydomain.com/shop2 and want to share customer details between the two shops. Basically, i don't want for customers who have already registered on shop1 to have to go through the whole registration process again on shop2.

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

OK, now I'm confused...

staypop says no problem, fotofx says it can't be done... :huh:

@fotofx: this is not the solution i'm after. I've been reading about seo and google's preferences and came to the conclusion that google likes folder better than subdomains. Actually, google would then index my site as a single content-rich site and subdomains are considered as individual sites. I would like my frontpage to have a few images for different departments of my company that would link to folders. Google will see that as internal links. If i use subdomains, google will see it as external links and my domain will be content-empty. **Please **correct me if i'm wrong.

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

The mod will look at mydomain.com/site1 and /site2 as being the same domain. Using site1.mydomain.com is seen as a seperate domain.

With Zen Cart it is POSSIBLE to do anything, but the mod will not work using /site1 /site2 using the mod as-is..

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Let me clarify a bit... Using subdirectories would make the home directories and thus the cart root as being in seperate places as two seperate carts.

By using site1. etc.. You are using an DNS A record to point both sites to the SAME home directory and files. The mod looks at the header to determine what site was entered and then uses an override file to overwrite any or all of the loaded MySql configuration data while still using all the same files.

Template selection comes from MySql and can be changed using the same override file.

Hope this helps..

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

wow, first of all, thank you for such a quick answer.

OK, i guess i'll have to go with subdomains cause this unique login for customers is a must-have.

BTW, am i right about google and the advantage of using folders over subdomains?

Once again, thank you very much for your help.

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Just as Zen Cart does... Google would look at folders as being part of the same site..

Seperate A records would indicate seperate sites but I am not sure how it is scored.

I have one cart running the mod with 5 domains on it. All seem to do fairly well in Google and in some searches will occupy most of the first Google page.

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Just a second... Now i'm confused again...

You have one cart using 5 domains. But that's not what i want.

I've created another zc site with a new database and new template. Site2 would use some modules that site1 doesn't and the other way around. So, actually, i'll have two completely different shops selling different items and all i want is to share customer details between these shops. Is this module what i need? :lookaroun

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

My 5 domains are using a common customer and product base. But the look and virtually all controls and graphics are seperate. Unless you knew you would be hard pressed to figure out they are the same cart.

5 Domains, One Admin area.. If you register at one store you can use any of the other 4 without reregistering.

The module allows seperate templates so you can have very different stores if required. But they are really only 1 store using a common database and admin area..

What you're saying is that i've been developing my other site for nothing?! I can send it to my recycle bin now, right?

OK, would you be so kind to explain where to go from here? I have my current site and i'll transfer it to a subdomain. What next? Install multisite module and start working on the other site or what?

I lost it, I don't understand this module anymore... :(

@staypop: no problem, it could happen even to me... :wink:

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Don't trash everything...

Take the template from site2 and put it in site1's template folder.

Do a database dump of site2 or print all your config if you have allot of custom stuff (image sizes, etc)

Install the multisite module and create your config files..

You should have one for each store..

site1.mydomain.com_config.php
site2.mydomain.com_config.php

The site1 config should have at the least

<?php
$template_dir = "site1template";
define('SITE_NAME','site1');
define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://site1.mydomain.com');
?>

Duplicate the site1 config and rename it to the site2 config as above.

Go into admin and run the multisite tool. Select "display configuration for a new site"

Copy that data and paste it in under the above php code in the site2 config file. Make all the necessary changes to the site2 config.. HINT.. You only need to have the lines that are differant but I leave the others in commented out in case I ever need to make changes.

Once this is done you or your hosting company will need to make the domain name changes... Be careful if you use an alias. It is important that the request comes to the server for the alternate domain name, I have seen CNAME records not work.

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

OK, I did all that you said and I'm very happy so far - it's quite simple, I was afraid it would be more complex. But now i'm stuck on this part:

fotofx:

Once this is done you or your hosting company will need to make the domain name changes... Be careful if you use an alias. It is important that the request comes to the server for the alternate domain name, I have seen CNAME records not work.

What domain name changes are you talking about? I did set up my site2.domain.com but i'm not sure how to connect it to site1.domain.com - some redirection or what? Could you please explain as simple and as detailed as possible? :smile: Thanks in advance!

Re: MultiSite Module Support Thread

Whoever is doing your hosting need to go into the DNS record for mydomain.com and there will already be an A record for www

You need A records for site1 and site2 pointing to the same IP as the www

When you are done you are going to have to figure which storefront will be the default and create a copy of that config for the www if you are going to use it.
