Is Zen Cart You Real Job

Just wondering if using Zen Cart is your real daytime job, or if you use it to freelance web dev or is your cart a side job?

I personally fit 3 of the topics:

  1. I'm Employed by a Business using Zen Cart
  2. I am an Independent Web Developer
  3. I use Zen Cart for a Side Job that I Tend Part Time

But number 1 is my primary Job so I guess I have to vote for #1

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

I think if you fit into more than one choice; you're probably in the Eat, Sleep and Live Zen Cart Category.

Amazingly enough, when I obsess about a project like I do, I usually wake up at night dreaming about the project.

Here's my testimony:
Using Zen Cart has been so easy that I don't have to have nightmares about it!

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

I haven't dreamt about Zen yet, but I have dreamt COBOL code that actually worked.

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

I too fit more than one category.

And I too have dreamt code! Years ago, while writing a multi-user database in HyperCard (ouch!) I woke up one morning with a couple of dozen lines of code floating in my mind, which solved a difficult problem I'd been having. The mind is a fascinating thing.

The first programming language I learned was BASIC. After that I took a course that taught JCL, COBOL, Assembly and a quick pass by Fortran.

Reports of the death of COBOL have been highly exaggerated. I use it daily. :smartalec:

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

Ah, the old "dream the solution to a coding problem."

I too have had these moments in my sleep. A problem that could not be solved is revealed while I dream.

The mind is an incredible tool. Sometimes the answer is obvious to the subconscious mind- while in waking state the mind is cluttered...then think of the problem while drifting off to sleep...

Then I mumble the answer while sleeping on my drool encrusted pillow.

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

In my first computer course we had to do a little programming in COBOL to see what the business students used (making punch cards and feeding them into the reader) and we thought that was a stupid clumsy language back then compared to Fortran 4 and Macro... are they still around? (dunno) We were advanced - we could use the teletype machines to enter our code. ;)

I'm sure Fortran is used... somewhere. Macro, I don't know.

You'll be happy to know COBOL no longer requires punch cards. It did when I was in college (not studying computers), but not later when I took programming - although Fortran did. Since I started programming as a professional, we've use PCs as "smart terminals" and there's a version of COBOL that can be coded and run on PCs. I did a pretty sophisticated package with that about 20 years ago.

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

This was in 1974, when our community college had just gotten its own computer (singular!) instead of timesharing with the local state university campus.

We had a pretty rapid evolution in the two years I was there, going from punch cards and teletypes to monitors with keyboards...

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

Man you people are OLD  LOL! Glenn I remember the same thing. I first went to Morton College in Cicero Illinois it was our local communuty college. We had to use JCL that you had to create with a punch card machine. Then of coarse your entirre Cobol program as well. When it compiled it came out on green bar paper I believe it was 133 characters wide. SO you could go over it and make changes  WOW is all ya can say to how far things have come

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

My online business (zen-cart shop) is not my real job. But, it is increasingly taking my time and attention away from my day job.

Hopefully by the end of the year I can let my day job go, and just sell online. It is more fun, and less headaches...except for when a new version of zen-cart comes out. Upgrading is always a big headache for me.

Re: Is Zen Cart You Real Job

After several years of seriously starting and stopping to do other things, my photography and art gallery is almost ready to launch with Zen Cart. So I can't answer the poll yet, but in a few weeks, this will be my full time gig. Well, as full time as any of my projects get. :)
