Great software if you can program..

Well, I took a shot and planned to transfer my 64 sites to Zen Cart. As a business with livelihoods dependent on these sites, don't think it would be the responsible thing to do at this time. Our plan was to donate the fees we currently pay monthly to an open source software. However, I see now that 'support' and 24 hour availability is what companies that use a commercial software are paying for. And if you make your living based on the performance of a software package.. it has to be chosen wisely.

As a suggestion only, why not have an area devoted to companies that are willing to pay/donate for that kind of support?

In closing, kudos and a very loud applause to the team that worked on Zen Cart and made it possible for thousands to get off the 'commercial' grid!

Re: Great software if you can program..

That is what the Commercial Help Wanted is about ...

I have found between that and a few PMs you can usually get the work you want done.

Good luck with your sites ... and let us know when you come back around to work into being totally Zenned ...

Re: Great software if you can program..

For the most part, once Zen Cart is setup and functional there is not much that goes wrong, thus, no need for round-the-clock Support. If there is a problem it is usually due to what somebody did whilst working on the site (which includes within the Admin section) or the Hoster did something they shouldn't have; and which you would contact the Hoster about.

And of course, no new work / changes should be done on a live site -- which gives the opportunity to work out any kinks before transferring to the live site. That takes a lot of pressure off everyone.

Ajeh, personally I think it may be a good thing to consider.

If ZC developers can get stable funding by some businesses, then you can have more full-time developers working on the software. And the whole community will benefit from this.

Of course the software itself is still opensource, the free help is still available here, but if someone need commercial help from reliable source, they can always seek out help from certified ZC support team.

But, I think you failed to take into consideration the 'thousands' that are using it.. and the 'thousands' more that will be using it. This creates a 24 hour period of those in distress. And, having programmed software since 1978, I can testify to the fact that nothing in the world of software or web sites is ever 'completely' finished. I only suggested that support be offered to further offset the costs to the 'Team', and to maybe give them a little more incentive (not that they already don't have it.. or give their all). If the 'team' gets enough funding. it may give them the opportunity to make a few bucks for doing all they have done. I grew up telling my kids.. if you find something that you like and can make a living at it.. you'll never have to work a day in your life. And, not to deprive 3rd party programmers from making a buck; but there are those that make these mods for dozens of other carts as well.. and in my opinion some don't really know the software as well as they should.. nor can they make mods that would be as functional and error free as the 'team'. Again, I just offered one mans opinion and suggested a service for those that may be interested. Maybe a poll of this topic would be a good place to begin?

If there were enough companies willing to pay for support and enough money could be raised then we could possibly fund some research into cloning the Dev Team. If we cloned Linda though it would mean an additional 20,000 posts per day to the forum and we might have to upgrade the server it is on

Regards,
Christian.
