Easy Populate 1.2.5.4 support

Hi I have utf problem also.. N it freaks me out..
My whole db runs in unicode, the admin pages are utf8 encoded, when I export, it exports utf txt files.. When I open I can set to utf8 read encoding.. It shows nice.. When I try to save Xcell I can only choose between "tab-delimited" or "unicode".. There is no separate encoding.. That's one thing.. First I tried the "tab-delimited" option.. Result: after uploading and processing it, all öüóőúéáűí became ????????? characters.. Akay, I thought I just can give a sht n try unicode simply, 'cos I compared with the original exported file, and the tabs seemed to be ok.. But It seems like it didn't processed anything cos the last echo is:

I am confused by your post - my db is in utf8 also, but the whole point of EP is to avoid dealing with sql and php and utf8 etc. Did you post to the wrong place? Are you working in PHPMyAdmin? Frankly, I would LOVE to know the answer to your question because of all the trouble I'm having with EP. I wish I knew how to export/import directly into a MySql db!

It was because EPA version 3.03 promised:

that I paid for the Advanced version of EP. However, it does not seem to have helped (see below.) The attribute headers are still wrong. the headers are picking up option names/values that have been deleted from the db while the actual data is ok, i think.

I copied one piece of the txt file and transposed it to show the mismatch:

Well, I still have heard ZILCH from Nicholas or anybody else on this post - I am actually going to give up and do the attributes manually because I have wasted waaaaaayyyy too much time not being able to fix this!!!

But here's an update which may or may not tie into others's issues:

1. I had to use Open Office to open the attributes txt file because My Mac Excel 2004 won't recognize more than 200 something columns. OO actually recognized utf8 and handles the file well.

2. I chop up the att txt file into smaller pieces so i can convert them to .xls

3. I work in Excel and save the .xls to tab delimited .txt file. (xls to txt works great for EP's Full_ or EPA's Store_ files. The uploads work well.)

What's worked so far for attributes:

1. If I chop up the file to only my first option id - that's never been deleted - the db update works fine.

2. If I select just option id # 21 which is referred to as #20 since I had a deletion before it, I can't get either file to work:
   a. the file with headers called #20 and data called #21, nor
   b. where i've changed the headers to match the data as id #21

**What's weird is that both of them report "products updated successfully." but when I go in thru phpmyadmin, nothing has been changed at all whatsoever.

Have I chopped up the file too much? Or does EP's att headers (or EPA's for that matter) JUST NOT WORK???

ALSO, Does anybody know how to export/import safely using PHPMyAdmin? Export as csv? What import options do you use???

I work in Excel and save the .xls to tab delimited .txt file.
Try using Open Office.. works much better with EP than excel.

I would but I can't save from OO to a tab delimited .txt file. I'm using OO 3.0 beta. What format do you save it to so that EP accepts it?

Just to add to Misty... once you select .csv it will give you the option of which delimeters to use. Here is where you'll select TAB.

Hi Timbo77.

I just did the install yesterday, and there is a step-by-step guide in the Install.txt file in the package you downloaded which will guide your way through.

Remember to backup your database and files before trying. You will find guides on how-to if your search this forum for backup.

I'm assuming that you read the instructions, and you have a /temp folder created and it's permissions are set correctly (it is chmod 777). If that is not the case, try that first, as that is the most likely cause!

The host gave me SSH access - mind you, I'm a newbie here - to do the upload. (I'm using putty for SSH.)

1. I noticed in tutorials on SSH that the file name ends in ".sql". Should I use that extension or use the ".txt" extension on my file?

2. The host recommended that I not split the file. Do I need to change anything on the Easy Populate configuration since I'm not splitting the file?

Any and all advice is appreciated. I may not be able to reply to responses right away...the toddler might need its momma.:D

Hi Linda,

Please use this at you own descretion, as I never used SSH, but if it is in sql format, it would probably need to be socked straight into the database (not uploaded via EP). There is a MySQL Patch in the tools section that allows for sql inserts. Backup your database, make a 1 product file and try inserting it there (just copy/paste the file there). If it works, great, if not, you will get a host of error messages and hopefully no ill effects. Push come to shove, just restore that backup you did a few minutes before, no harm, no foul. PS, I backup before any EP upload, just in case. It would be prudent to do so if using SSH also.

My file is in the "easy populate" format. (I had just thought about changing the extension to .sql, but I do not think that's necessary - after reading a bit more on SSH.)

What I am not clear about is whether I can do a direct import of the easy populate formatted file to the database. Ultimately, I will give it a try with backups, etc...but, will check the forum for any other replies before doing so.

(My host is trying to fix a problem before I can try, but I will update the forum once done...hopefully successfully.

A lot of my products are going to be the same price so i downloaded Easy Populate. When i go Admin/ Tools/ Easy Populate I can only export my current products list as a text document.

Here are my options;
Download Complete tab-delimited .txt file to edit (Attributes Not Included)
Download Model/Price/Qty tab-delimited .txt file to edit
Download Model/Category tab-delimited .txt file to edit
Download Froogle tab-delimited .txt file
Download Model/Attributes tab-delimited .txt file

When i open my complete download with open office i get this;

The wiki said something about being able to read this file as a spread sheet, how do you do this?

Open openoffice calc then file open and choose
Files of type: Text CVS

then it will work...:D

Even if i open calc, when i open the file with calc it opens it as a text document in the text editor. It even does this when i rename to file to .cvs

My admin Easy Populate tools will only let me export files as txt, is this normal?

I noticed this problem too. First I create a new OO spreadsheet then I use the menu Insert / Sheet from File. Good luck.

Sorry for all the questions but how do I upload my new catalog?
Ive only changed the names of a few products as a test. Do I need to save the open office spread sheet as a txt file? The closest I can find is a .csv file, but that doesn't seem to work.
